Introduction

Table Notes is a widely-used mobile application for spreadsheet management. The redesign aimed to address usability challenges, improve aesthetic appeal, and streamline the user experience to align with modern user expectations. This case study outlines the redesign process, changes implemented, and their impact.

Key Challenges Identified in the Original App:

  1. Outdated UI: The interface felt cluttered and lacked visual appeal.

  2. Low Discoverability: Essential features were difficult to locate.

  3. Complex Navigation: The sidebar-based navigation was unintuitive.

  4. Operational Inefficiency: Users had to perform multiple clicks for simple actions.

  5. Limited Accessibility: The app had a steep learning curve for new users.

Redesign Objectives:

  1. Enhance Visual Appeal: Create a sleek and modern design.

  2. Improve Usability: Simplify navigation and workflows.

  3. Boost Efficiency: Optimize interactions to reduce operational steps.

  4. Increase Discoverability: Highlight essential features and make them easily accessible.

  5. Minimize Learning Curve: Design an interface intuitive enough for beginners.

Key Changes Implemented

  1. Look and Feel

    • Introduced a modern, user-friendly design with consistent branding.

    • Updated iconography to improve visual coherence and recognition.

  2. Navigation

    • Replaced the sidebar with a bottom navigation bar for easier access.

    • Restructured categories to minimize scrolling and reduce friction.

  3. Efficiency Enhancements

    • Optimized workflows to reduce the number of clicks required for common actions.

    • Added features like drag-to-edit, allowing column width adjustments with a single click.

    • Introduced continuous data entry to streamline input processes.

  4. Discoverability

    • Added a table preview and brief descriptions to template cards.

    • Renamed “Tags” to “Folders” for better user understanding.

  5. Feature Additions

    • Landscape mode for better spreadsheet usability.

    • Input dialogue enhancements for faster data entry.

    • Revamped “Magic Template” feature to make it more engaging.
